๐ Orlando, Florida ยท Milk District
MilkMesh
Off-grid. Encrypted. Community-powered.
Building a resilient, decentralized mesh network across Orlando and Central Florida using Meshtastic and MeshCore.
What is Mesh Networking?
Communication that doesn't depend on anyone's infrastructure but your own โ fresh from the source, no middleman required
Decentralized
No cell towers, no ISPs, no single point of failure. Each node is both a sender and a relay. The network grows with every device that joins โ there's no central server to go down.
Encrypted
All traffic is AES-256 encrypted by default. Messages are private between participants โ no eavesdropping, no metadata harvesting, no corporate surveillance. Your conversations belong to you.
Resilient
When hurricanes knock out power, cell towers, and internet โ mesh keeps working. LoRa radios run for days on small batteries and reach miles without any existing infrastructure.
The Technology Stack
Two powerful open-source platforms โ the cream of the crop
Meshtastic
The original open-source LoRa mesh networking platform. Meshtastic turns inexpensive radios into a decentralized communication network โ text messaging, GPS positioning, telemetry, and more โ all without cellular or WiFi.
- Open-source firmware for ESP32 & nRF52 hardware
- Bluetooth & WiFi companion app (iOS, Android, Web)
- Multi-hop message routing across the mesh
- GPS location sharing and mapping
- Channel-based group communication
- Massive global community and hardware ecosystem
MeshCore
A next-generation mesh protocol pushing the boundaries of what's possible with LoRa. MeshCore introduces advanced features like managed flooding, room-based chat, and efficient binary protocols designed for constrained radio links.
- Optimized packet routing with managed flood mesh
- Room-based encrypted group messaging
- Designed for ultra-low bandwidth efficiency
- Compatible with existing LoRa hardware
- Growing firmware and tooling ecosystem
- Focused on reliability and range
Why Orlando Needs a Mesh Network
Flat terrain, tropical storms, and a herd that looks out for each other
Hurricane Season is 6 Months Long
Central Florida faces tropical storms, hurricanes, and severe weather from June through November every year. When cell towers go dark and power lines come down, communities go silent at the moment they need communication most. A mesh network provides a communication backbone that doesn't rely on anyone's infrastructure.
๐ด Flat Terrain = Long Range
Orlando's flat geography is actually an advantage for LoRa radio. Without mountains blocking signals, nodes with even modest elevation can reach impressive distances. A single node on a three-story building can cover neighborhoods for miles in every direction.
๐ข Businesses Can Be Force Multipliers
Commercial buildings, especially those with rooftop access, are ideal relay points. A restaurant, office building, or warehouse that installs a $40 solar-powered node becomes a critical infrastructure point for its entire neighborhood.
โก Power-Independent Operation
LoRa nodes draw milliwatts of power. A small solar panel and battery can keep a node running indefinitely โ no grid power needed. This is exactly the kind of resilience Florida communities need when the lights go out.
๐ Privacy by Default
Unlike cellular or WiFi networks, mesh traffic doesn't pass through corporate servers. There's no ISP logging your messages, no carrier metadata collection. AES-256 encryption ensures only your intended recipients can read your communications.

Have a Cold Glass of Mesh.
MilkMesh is Central Florida's home for mesh networking โ from our base in Orlando's Milk District, we're building a network that connects neighborhoods, supports local businesses, and provides resilient communication when it matters most. Join the herd โ we're also part of the statewide AreYouMeshingWith.us movement connecting mesh operators across Florida.
Join the Herd in Under an Hour
From unboxing to on-mesh in four simple steps โ no bull
Get a Device
Pick up a supported LoRa radio. The Wio Tracker 1110 Dev Board, Heltec V3, or RAK WisBlock are popular choices starting around $25โ$40.
Flash the Firmware
Use the Meshtastic web flasher at flasher.meshtastic.org โ connect via USB and flash in your browser. No command line needed.
Configure via App
Download the Meshtastic app on your phone. Connect via Bluetooth, set your region to US, pick a name, and you're on the default channel.
Join the Mesh
Your node automatically connects to any nearby Meshtastic devices. Place it near a window or outdoors for best range. You're now part of the Orlando mesh.
